Netfirms, your days are numbered.

16 Aug, 2008

My current web host is Netfirms but my account expires next month. I’m changing hosts.

Netfirms is a “Green” company with great customer service, great uptime, and lousy Wordpress support. They provide Wordpress 2.0! They refuse to upgrade their Wordpress installs to allow for automatic upgrade and consequently I must do a manual upgrade each time Wordpress updates their software. I don’t mind telling you, it’s a real nuisance and I can think of better ways to spend my valuable time. Their customer service department says that Netfirms won’t consider upgrading unless they get enough customer requests. Obviously, the Wordpress blogging world doesn’t use Netfirms otherwise there would be no issue.

I read with envy all of my Wordpress blogging buddies who can install a wordpress upgrade with the click of a mouse. I want to be them! And I will be them. This week, Host Gator gets my business.

Bye, bye Netfirms.

Flock rocks!

13 Aug, 2008

As an internet marketing virtual assistant, I take part in a lot of online social networking. To keep track of my social networking sites I have them all favorited in my browser and I’ve also set them as home pages in all of my Firefox tabs. Generally though, I get so busy that I forget to socialize. But not anymore.

One day last week I read about the Flock browser. I decided to check it out. It looked interesting so I downloaded it for a trial run. I can honestly say, “I love it!”. If you haven’t tried Flock, you really should give it a whirl. It’s described as The Social Web Browser for the Modern Web. I think it’s the cats pajamas.

I love the fact that all of my social web favorites are found inside the browser with a click of a button. I can open up the tab and I have direct access to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Photobucket, Wordpress, Gmail, Yahoo mail and so many others that I don’t use yet! Having quick access to these sites makes it so much easier for me to visit them. The downside to Flock is that it doesn’t support LinkedIn yet. But they are taking requests to add it to the sidebar. My vote has been logged.

I also love the fact that my favorite Firefox addons are compatible with Flock. I love Colorzilla, SEO for firefox and Rank Checker. It’s a little early to decide if Flock is my new favorite browser but it’s looking better every day.

On Facebook

23 Jul, 2008

I’ve been actively participating on Facebook since the early part of 2008. I jumped on the bandwagon to see what the fuss was about and, at first, I wasn’t too sure it was a good idea. I mean, why Facebook? Isn’t that for college kids?

Well, actually, no. Not anymore. In fact, the average age of Facebook users is increasing and more small business owners and entrepreneurs are joining every day. So, what’s all the fuss about anyway? Why are they joining? Simple; networking, networking and more networking.

The key to networking on Facebook is relationship building. I join many internet marketing and small business related groups on Facebook. My goal, like the other members, is to meet prospective clients and hopefully turn them into paying clients. I’ve found the best way to do this is to reach out to each person who adds me as their friend. I try to take the time to send them a personalized note of thanks and comment and oftentimes, they’ll reply back. Many times this begins a mutual exchange of polite and meaningless conversation. You know the kind, “Thanks for adding me to your network. I look forward to getting to know you better” and then you never hear from them again.

However, there are times when the exchange involves sharing of personal information, like you’d share at a gathering when you’re sitting beside someone you don’t know and you begin the conversation with, “so, what do you do?” The conversation evolves from there. Before you know it, you’ve made a new acquaintance.

That’s my goal on Facebook. Making acquaintances, because they might not need the services of an internet marketing virtual assistant, but I’m sure they know someone who does. My hope is that they mention me to that person. That’s why I’m on Facebook.

Wordpress Upgrade - the second time’s a charm

16 Jul, 2008

I logged in to make a post today and noticed my Wordpress needed upgrading. I wanted to take care of it immediately since I waited 2 weeks the last time a new upgrade was issued and during that time my blog got hacked. I wasn’t going to let that happen again.

The last time I had to upgrade I called upon my good friend Bri of Mad Hatter Design Company. She’s great with all things blog. This time however, Bri’s busy with her own stuff so I decided to bite the bullet and do the upgrade myself. Uh oh.

Since I learn best by watching I thought it would be great to find a video tutorial to teach me how to upgrade. I found a tutorial on YouTube that made the upgrade possible in 5 minutes. Great! So, off I went and followed the instructions exactly. The moment of truth came when I went to check out my blog and it had disappeared. (my apologies to anyone who might have stumbled across my missing blog between the hours of 8pm and 11:43 pm eastern time)

Noticing that my entire blog was missing was not a happy moment for me. I decided to venture over to the Wordpress forums (where I should’ve gone in the first place!) and see if I could find out what the heck had happened.

It turns out the YouTube video I followed had left some stuff out. It seems the guy left out the part where you have to delete the old files off your server before you upload the new files. (minor detail) Anyway, I decided to try once again, this time following the written instructions from Wordpress. My second attempt worked like a charm.

My lesson learned: follow the instructions provided by Wordpress. (they’re given out for a reason)

Build backlinks the old fashioned way

1 Jul, 2008

As an internet marketing virtual assistant I get requests from prospective clients asking me to help them increase their rankings in the search engines through the use of SEO (search engine optimization).  What I tell them is that SEO is a process that includes many variables. It’s not enough to simply optimize your site with proper keywords, title tags, description tags and killer content. You need links. Lots and lots of links.

The key though, is quality links. Now, you’re probably thinking, “okay, how do I get links”. Well, there’s lots of black hat (bad guy) SEOs who don’t care how you get links, they just think links are the goal with no concern for where and how to get them.

I’m not one of those girls. I believe in getting links the old fashioned way. Earn them through hard, honest work. One of the best ways to get good quality links is by writing articles and submitting them to article directories with high page rank

Writing articles accomplishes 2 things: it helps build quality links to your site by providing inbound links from a respected website AND it helps establish you as an expert by your target market. Sounds good to me!

Your thoughts?

Summize it to say…

21 Jun, 2008

that Twitter just got a whole lot better! With Summize you can track the conversations in Twitter related to the keyword you type in to the search box. For instance, I typed in Virtual Assistant and about 20 tweets popped up all about virtual assistants. Some tweets were from VAs advertising their business but other tweets were from business owners looking for a VA.

I’ve added this tool to my arsenal and will be using it a lot!

Discover Your Coaching Niche and Watch Your Income Grow

20 May, 2008

Have you noticed how many coaches there are around these days? As coaching has become more widely known in recent years, there seems to have been an explosion of Life Coaches, but how many are really earning a good living from what they do? The answer sadly, is not many.

One of the main reasons for this seems to be that there are so many people offering a offering similar packages of a generalist nature, which makes it difficult for prospective clients to really know how to choose one from another.

Yet there are many highly successful Coaches, so what are they doing differently? The true answer to this question is probably complex but the most successful Coaches I know all do the same simple thing; they specialize! They have found their niche, they stick to it, become an expert, and then they become wealthy. In fact it’s been suggested that those who specialize earn on average 2-5 times more than those who do not.

For many practitioners, finding a niche is a natural progression from previous career experience. For example in my own case, as a former Midwife, my particular passion and area of expertise is as a Maternity Coach. For others though, one of the appeals of coaching is the chance to make a fresh start and leave previous work experience in the past.

Whatever your background, it’s likely that you will still be able to translate your passion and enthusiasm into a recognizable niche that will help you attract more respect and income, even if it takes some initial research to get yourself established.

Here are just a few tips to set you on your way if you haven’t yet found your niche.

1. Consider what really motivates and excites you, ask yourself, “if I could chose, who would be my ideal clients” Use your answers to guide you in clarifying your own work values. What is it that you want to give as well as receive by being a Coach?

2. Be selective and focused in your marketing. Trying to get a general message out to everyone can be exhausting and may mean that you end up working very hard for very little.

3. Become an expert in the challenges and solutions of your target market, not because you wish to become a consultant or mentor but so that your clients can recognize you as being someone who understands their needs.

4. Make a commitment to stay focused and then make a business plan. This way you can make every single marketing hour count by targeting a specific market that will already be receptive to your message and looking for solutions.

5. Finally, value yourself for the special service you are providing. After all when you specialize you deserve to be paid more.

Remember, the smaller or more specialized the marketplace, the easier it will be to attract your prospective clients attention. Having a niche also lends itself to developing a distinctive brand for your company, to gaining greater respect from your colleagues and to recognition as an expert within your specialty. Think about the benefits!

Hire a VA: Build More Time, Freedom and Money into Your Business

15 May, 2008

Thinking about hiring a virtual assistant to help with your business? If you’re not convinced about the value a VA can bring then read on…

Delegating just five tasks to a virtual assistant will save you time and bring value to your business. How?

1. Send out your weekly Ezine:
This mundane task can take as little as 15 minutes for a VA who knows what she’s doing. You’ve just added 15 minutes to your day by delegating this task to your virtual assistant

2. Post articles to your blog and directories:
Delegating this task to your VA can add 30 minutes or more to your day depending on the number of places you submit to.

3. Post new teleclass information:
Let your virtual assistant handle this task for you and save yourself up to 30 minutes

4. Update your website:
Post new products to your website and/or make minor changes to the site
If you’ve ever stayed up all night trying to do anything with your website you might be happy to delegate this thankless task to your VA. She can get the job done in up to 30 minutes or less.

5. Update your projects:
Do you have manuals or worksheets that need updating? If so, your virtual assistant will be happy to maintain them for you. You can save yourself at least 30 minutes by delegating to your VA.

(Note that each job may take more or less time, depending upon the quantity of changes, or work, etc.)

So there you have it! All together you’ve gained a minimum of 2 hours just by outsourcing some of your workload to a virtual assistant. What will you do with those 2 hours? Will you take a class, work on that book you’ve always wanted to write, treat yourself to a manicure, take a walk with your loved ones, take on an extra client for more income…

Shame on you Babelon Lion! The jig is up. kasharo2003@yahoo.com

1 May, 2008

My blog was hacked.

Yes it’s true. I logged in to my blog last night to make a post and, low and behold, there was another person’s name added to my User list. Who knows how long it’s been there.

It completely freaked me out. At first I didn’t know what was going on because I had thought my blog was set up not to accept anyone without my admin permission. It seems this person managed to hack his/her way in.

So, I emailed my friend Bri and told her about it. Fortunately for me, she knows blogs and wordpress like the back of her hand. She logged in to my account and confirmed that yes indeed, my blog had been hacked. Now, the good part is that Babelon Lion only wanted me to know that he/she had been there. There was no malicious work going on. No passwords changed or anything else . So, for that, I guess I should be grateful?

Bri advised me to immediately change my password to something really hard. So, I did. I’m just glad that I didn’t have any personal information stored in there.  But, I have definitely learned a valuable lesson. The password must be something so difficult that you cannot possibly remember it off the top of your head.  And updating to the latest software version of these open source programs ASAP is good policy.

I hope that Babelon Lion is putting his/her hacking skills to good use now and is finished practicing with my blog. I hope he/she now works for some elite government agency hacking in to the accounts of slime balls. That’s where hacking skills can be put to good use, not on the blog of a virtual assistant. Give me a break!
